Philip Rubinov Jacobson: " I think it’s good to ask yourself this question every so often…..if the whole world followed you, would they be pleased with where you took them?"

BPP: Who are you?  And who you really are?

Philip Rubinov Jacobson is an internationally renowned artist (painter, sculptor, printmaker), writer, teacher, martial artist, philosopher and traveler and recognized as a key figure in both the Fantastic and Visionary lineages of art. Considered a 'prodigy and problem child' by the public school system, he was sent to the University of Rochester at the age of 13 for studies in Biology and the Fine Arts. He holds 5 academic degrees in Painting, Printmaking and Sculpture, Psychology, Philosophy and Comparative Religion. But the artist places much more value on awakening to artistic knowledge  in 1973 – 74 under his mentor, Ernst Fuchs, the renowned artist and founder of the Vienna School of Fantastic Realism. He further credits his wandering naked with sadhus in India in 1978 with a spiritual awakening (1975 -78)  that married his spirit with an alchemy of art, consciousness and dharma. In 1978, while in India,  he was instructed by his meditation master to awaken others through art and spirit  simply through a natural contact  and teaching. In 1997 he was formally charged by his mentor, Ernst Fuchs: “…to carry on the visionary lineage by teaching the knowledge of the old masters in the art of painting and to establish an academy and museum in that regard. Philip's knowledge of painting prevails beneath the incredible versatility of his work. The artist has participated in more than 100 exhibitions internationally and his writings have been read worldwide in numerous magazine articles and books. He is the author of what has become a  classic on art, creative process and the transformation of consciousness:

But the artist states: …that is what I do – not who I am. If anything; I am a lover; one who seeks beauty, truth and goodness. I try to serve to inspire others and to alleviate the suffering of others whenever it is in my power to do so and often through the healing power of art.  If Westerners insist on defining others by what they do then I would have to say, that for now, my field of action would be in the international art seminars (or 'creative  communities'), exhibitions and events we arrange in which participants are transformed, empowered, inspired  and awakened  to  a higher self-awareness and knowledge, ability and confidence in their work.  A new feeling and  sense of belonging emerges as integral artists, or as a ‘visionary tribe of siblings’ if you will. And this is of great value, even life-saving for many creative workers who have believed they were out there all alone. Whether just beginning or an advanced  creative worker, everyone  discovers  secrets of the masters while unleashing a new vision in their own visual language when they participate. BPP: If you could say something important to others who were listening, what would you tell them?

Philip Rubinov Jacobson: Each one of us can change the world, even if one person at a time. To count to the number ‘one-million’, you must begin with the number ‘one’. And although it is most important to do all we can now to alleviate suffering for others, it is also good to remember that the earth is a diary of our spirit and the final question will be about the footprints we leave behind and where those footprints will lead.

BPP:  What is your true dream, the one that keeps you up at night and if one day it were to come true you would feel peace and calmness in your heart?

Philip Rubinov Jacobson: In all honesty, although I have some ‘big ideas’ and goals, my deepest dream is to be with my beloved muse until the end of my days and together, with her, fufill and support each other’s dreams. For me, that is to establish and International Integral Arts Center for Peace.  The goal of this center is to inspire peace through artistic forms, integral education and experiences that promote global understanding. In the broadest sense, the mission of this center is to cultivate a world-centric program, association and network of prominent international and local artists, authors, people in business, scientists and educators working on the cultivation of peace through a neutral, non-political, non-dogmatic approach that can only be purely offered through the universal language of art. The center would be a catalyst for uplifting awareness of the interrelatedness of life, transforming limiting belief systems that separate people by inspiring a new attitude of tolerance, acceptance, inclusion and the celebration of our differences; Cooperation through Co-creation.

BPP: How is life currently for the people in your country and what would you wish for them and for the planet at large?

Philip Rubinov Jacobson: Life in all countries must improve. I was never a nationalist in my thinking and have a world-centric view of things. Borders are absolute illusions and find it to be at the root cause of much of the suffering humanity has experienced and continues to experience.  From the depths of space the earth is a little blue pearl in the forehead of the stars. It is one pearl, one jewel, unmarked by borders and the illusion of separatism. My wish is for all the inhabitants of this planet to see one another as a mirror to their own life.

BPP: If you had a chance to be a child again would you choose the same life?

Philip Rubinov JacobsonI would choose the same life except I would flip one switch on my time machine to coordinate  a meeting with the woman I am in love with now and I’d like to do that  in 1973  as hippie-babies in the Austrian alps.  We would be the same age and both arrive at the same time and meet at Castle Wartholz to study with the great master, Ernst Fuchs. After this we would travel throughout Europe to see the great works of art and then on to the East to meet the great enlightened beings on a spiritual journey; perhaps walk in the footsteps of the Buddha, taking the same route that he forged and followed.  I would also be quite happy just to be with her now and share the present with her while co-creating our most radiant tomorrows.

BPP:  What was the exact moment that you realized what you wanted to do with your life?

Philip Rubinov Jacobson: I never really thought about what I wanted to do with my life because I was always doing it; being an artist or what I would call a creative-worker, or artistic-mystic. I suppose this became fully realized to me in this life when I understood the word “artist” around the age of four or five.

BPP:  How did you feel at this very moment?

Philip Rubinov Jacobson:The same as I did a moment before, except I was made aware by my artist-grandfather that life as an artist may very well be an arduous one. Nonetheless, the ‘feeling’ was one of excitement and adventure, and as a boy, like being a magician in Merlin’s world and a pirate on the Seven Seas of Art.  I was immediately excited to impart my enthusiasm and sense of artistic freedom to others and to ask them to board the ship too.
