Douglas Miller's portrait
Douglas Miller: "Don’t take things to serious. Unless of course they are very serious things."
Sometimes at night the sound of the night is sometimes ghostly.2010
Ink, pencil, and acrylic on paper.
32 X 20 inches. Diptych.
BPP: Who are you? And who are you
really?
Douglas Miller: I am a very mature boy trapped in a
man’s body. Well, not really trapped,
just there. But really I am a man with boyishly mature, almost manlike,
features. Also, I make drawings and show them to people.
"Only your dreams are all you only know." (DETAIL) Ink, acrylic, and pencil on paper. 2012.
BPP: If you could say something
important to others who were listening, what would you tell them?
Douglas Miller: The most important thing in life is, oh hold on someone is at the door. Ok, now I’m back. It was nobody. The dog barked and I thought someone knocked on the door, but it was nobody. Probably the most important thing is to not answer the door if no one is there. Or, don’t take things to serious. Unless of course they are very serious things.
I dream of you even when I'm laughing - 2011 Pencil & watercolour on found paper- 6.5X10inches
BPP: What is your true dream, the
one that keeps you up at night and if one day it were to come true you would
feel peace and calmness in your heart?
Douglas Miller: My true dream is to live in the
mountains with my wife, my daughter, and my dog. To play the ukulele in a canoe
without irony and to be free of anxiety.
Our limited possibilities are vast. 2012

BPP: How is life currently for the
people in your country and what would you wish for them and for the planet at
large?
Douglas Miller: Some
people here in the U.S. are either appalled
or apathetic. The idealism of Americans is bloated and seems to center around
money. Economic equality is unobtainable within the structure of capitalism. We
fail to recognize our own fallibility. For the planet at large, I would wish
that we could acknowledge our impermanence and behave better towards one
another.

BPP: If you had a chance to be a child
again would you choose the same life?
Douglas Miller: I would choose to look at more things
and read more when I was a child. Maybe I would have taken more opportunities
when I was younger. All in all though, I would choose the same life.

BPP: What was the exact moment
that you realized what you wanted to do with your life? How did you feel
at this very moment?
Douglas Miller: I don’t remember the exact moment,
maybe that means it hasn’t happened? I do remember drawing when I was a kid and
thinking that if I could do this for the rest of my life I would. Even now that
I have managed to make a meager living out of selling and making artwork, it
still boggles my mind that people enjoy seeing these things that I like to see
and that they (usually, hopefully) respond well.

BPP: Would you like to tell us something
we didn’t ask until now?
Douglas Miller:Thank you for being interested in what I do and what I say.
