BPP: Who are you?
And who you really are?
Loretta Gonzalez: I am an
artist working in the genre of Lowbrow art.
Finding the pretty in the
ugly. I am also a mother, wife, and art
educator. I am from
Texas and live in Dallas. I studied at
the University of Texas at Arlington
and received a BFA in Studio Art with a concentration in
Printmaking.
I can't
recall not ever being an artist. I
believe it is important to use my gift to say
something important, and share my gift with society. My purpose in life at the moment
is to give a voice to children.

BPP: If you could say something important to others
who were listening, what would you tell them?
Loretta Gonzalez: Don't give
up on your dream. Make it happen. Believe.

BPP: What is
your true dream, the one that keeps you up at night and if one day it were to
come true you would feel peace and calmness in your heart?
Loretta Gonzalez: My dream is
to be able to paint full time.

BPP: How is life currently for the people in your
country and what would you wish for them and for the planet at large?
Loretta Gonzalez: I believe
that life is great here in America. As
for the planet, I wish we as a people could get
along.

BPP: If you had a chance to be a child again would you
choose the same life?
Loretta Gonzalez: Yes, I
would repeat my childhood. I have been
able to use my past experiences in a positive
way, to create art work that provokes childhood memories and allows the viewer to
confront their childhood and difficult issues dealing with children.

"Maria" - created by Loretta Gonzalez from "I love you to death " series
BPP: What was
the exact moment that you realized what you wanted to do with your life? How did you feel at this very moment?
Loretta Gonzalez: There was
no clear moment, I have been an artist all of my adult life. I was a visual merchandiser
for department stores, I decorated for weddings, and I as a decorative painter. I have always been an educator. I educated my siblings and myself about art.

BPP: Would you like to tell us something we didn’t ask
until now?
Loretta Gonzalez: The title
of my current series is I Love You to Death. The soft colors are meant to draw the
viewer in for a closer look, revealing the message of cute and cuddly, but
deadly.
I use the
child and teddy bears as a metaphor to represent mothers that kill their children in
factual criminal cases. I have created
this series so the viewer finds the subject
matter of filicide approachable and
easier to confront and discuss.
